Sample 21-day Hi Low Tour

Day 01 A.M. Transfer to the airport for the flight to Bahar Dar. On arrival, drive 35 km South-East of Bahar Dar to reach the small town of Tississat named after the waterfalls of the Blue Nile. You will have to walk for about 30 minutes per way to reach the panoramic view point of the waterfalls. Return to Bahar Dar for lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon, boat excursion over Lake Tana to the Zeguie peninsula and visit of two beautifully painted churches that are found hidden in the small forest: Azoa Mariam and Ura Kidane Mihret.

Day 02 Drive to Gondar. Vist Gondar (lies at 2,200 m. above sea level) which was the imperial capital from the 17th to the mid-19th century. Visitors come to see the Imperial Compound, with the enchanting 'Fasalidas' castles, the bath of King Fasilides and the Debre Birhan Selassie church.

Day 03 Drive to Sankaber (3230masl) through a beautiful scenery and the villages of Falasha (Ethiopian Jews).

Day 04 Trek to Geech (3600masl) through the magnificent Semien plugs and the pillars of the majestic mountain seeing the semi afro alpine vegetations, heather, thistle globe, Rosa Abyssinica and more. The trek will take 5-7 hrs with plenty stop over to picture to see the endemic birds of Ethiopia.

Day 05 Early in the morning trek to mount Emet Gogo (3930masl) and to the breathtaking view of mount Kedadit (3760masl), where some of the rare endemic mammals - Ethiopian Wolf and afro alpine vegetations like giant lobelia, Rosa Abyssinica, Red hot poker and more - can be seen. The trek will take 7-9 hrs.

Day 06 Trek to Chenek (3600masl) through bushes, falls, dawn streams and the pillars of mountains. This will take 6-8hrs to the camping site. In the after noon walk around the camping area where the endemic Walia Ibex and Chilada Baboon and birds like Thick Billed Raven, Lammergeyers, Abyssinian Horn Bill can be seen flanking in the Semien Mountains sky.

Day 07 Trek to Hambiqo (3000masl) through the different plant species.

Day 08 In the morning trek to Ras Dashin (4562masl) the highest peak in Ethiopia and fourth in Africa through the smells of Afro alpine vegetations, particularly Giant Lobelia. On the way it can be seen we will have the chance to see the rare Ethiopian Wolf (Red fox) fighting with vultures.
Day 09 Trek back to Chenek and walk around in the camping site in the evening.

Day 10 Drive from Chenek to Axum passing by the spectacular Semien Mountains and crossing the Tekezze Gorge with its savannah vegetation.

Day 11 Visit of the historical sites of Axum including the St. Mary Church (where the Arc of the Covenant is said to be kept), the stele park, the Archaeological Museum of Axum, the ruins of the former palace of the Queen of Sheba, the ruins of the former palaces of King Kaleb and his successor King Gebre Meskal.

Day 12 Drive from Axum to Mekelle with a stop over at the Churches of Wukor Cherkos and the churches of Abreha Wa Atsbeha, a churches which are part of the rock hewn churches of Tigray.

Day 13 Drive from Mekelle to Lake Asale, salty Lake and visit the salt workers and the merchant from the highland the salt market and the lake and proceed 17 km to Dalol (116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) and enjoy the spectacular view and small hill which is colorful by hot spring in several places. The hot spring out with the sulfurs, potash and salt it forms spectacular formation.

Day 14 Drive back to Ahmed Ella, observing the camel caravans bringing salt to the Tigray towns for the markets

Day 15 Drive from Ahmed Ella to Dodom for the panoramic view of the volcanic activates of the surroundings.

Day 16 From Dodom, walk for 15kms to the volcanic hills (613 meters above sea level) which is 15kms one way. Around mid night, walk to see the volcanic eruption and then take rest; the eruption is so colorful and spectacular.

Day 17 Walk back to Dodom and then proceed driving back to Ahmed Ella.

Day 18 Drive from Ahmed Ella back to Mekelle, observing the camel caravans bringing salt to the Tigray towns for the markets.

Day 19 Drive from Mekelle to Lalibela passing by the highlands of Tigray and Wollo.

Day 20 Visit of the first group of rock-hewn monolithic churches in which are included Bieta Medhanialem (Chapel of the Holy Saviour) which is the biggest and Bieta Mariam (Chapel of Mary): three aisled with mural paintings and a covered pillar containing inscriptions about the end of the world according to the gadl (act), of this saintly King. Further visit of Bieta Denagel (Chapel of the Martyr Virgins), Bieta Meskal (Chapel of the Cross) and finally, the "double-church" of Debre Sina and Bieta Golgotha (women are not allowed in the latter since it's where the remains of King Lalibela are and also because it contains the tabernacle of the Holy Trinity. In the afternoon, visit of the second group of monolithic rock-hewn churches that are namely: Bieta Gabriel and Raphael, Bieta Merquorios, Bieta Emmanuel with unprecedented Axumite style and the Bieta Abba Libanos (said to have been built by King Lalibela's consort: Meskal Kebra) and visit also the Bieta Ghiorgis which is the cruciform chapel of St. George.

Day 21 Transfer to the airport for the flight back to Addis Ababa.
